History of the MAPP® Assessment

Origins (1940s → 1994)
The roots of MAPP trace to a post-WWII, pencil-and-paper placement instrument built for the forestry industry to improve safety and job fit in demanding mill and logging roles. In 1994, entrepreneur Henry Neils founded Assessment.com to modernize that idea for a broader purpose: help anyone match who they are with the work they’re built to do.

From paper to fast, online insight (1995)
Early versions of what was to become the MAPP assessment required hundreds of items and lengthy hand scoring. In 1995, the assessment was re-engineered into a concise, 71-item forced-choice format that can be completed in under 20 minutes and reported instantly making high-quality career guidance accessible at scale.

Continuous evolution.
Over the decades, MAPP® has undergone multiple updates refining item banks, report narratives, scoring logic; expanding languages; improving accessibility; and enhancing dashboards and APIs. Today, MAPP is supported by near real-time coordination with trusted labor-market sources BLS, O*NET, and related datasets so users see current role definitions, skills, salary ranges, and growth outlooks mapped to their motivational and aptitude patterns.

Psychometric rigor with everyday usability.
MAPP has undergone extensive reliability and validity reviews by psychologists, including studies correlating results with established instruments such as the Strong Interest Inventory®. While science is rigorous, reports are written in plain language so individuals, families, coaches, schools, and employers can use them without a specialist in the room.

Adopted across education and employment.
For more than two decades, career coaches, guidance offices, colleges, and HR teams have used MAPP to inform major selection, career exploration, hiring, promotion, development, and outplacement anywhere person-role fit matters. The guiding principle remains simple: put the right person in the right role to raise engagement, performance, and retention while reducing risk and turnover.
